About Tashkent

  • A "city of stone": the name "Tashkent" translates from Turkic and Persian as "stone city" or "city of stones".
  • Religious diversity: it is the only large city in Central Asia where Orthodox churches, synagogues, and mosques have historically coexisted.
  • Underground palaces: the Tashkent Metro was the first in Central Asia. Many stations, like Kosmonavtlar (space-themed) and Alisher Navoi, are designed like underground museums with elaborate chandeliers and mosaics.
  • Tallest tower: the Tashkent TV Tower stands at 375 meters, making it the tallest structure in Central Asia. An observation deck at 100 meters offers a 360-degree panorama of the city.
  • One of the greenest cities: despite its desert-like climate, Tashkent is famous for its vast parks, canals, and tree-lined avenues.
  • Gateway to the Silk Road: from Tashkent, the Afrosiyob high-speed train can whisk tourists to ancient Samarkand in just over two hours.
  • Plov capital: no visit is complete without visiting a dedicated Oshxona (Plov center) to eat Uzbekistan's national dish, cooked in massive communal cauldrons.
  • Safety & logistics: for 2026, travel has become more streamlined with expanded visa-free entry for many nationalities and easy domestic travel infrastructure.
